Miura Jun:MY RELICS

Opened in 1996, Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. As a commemorative event for the 25th anniversary, this exhibition displays a wide variety of pieces collected and produced by Mr. Miura Jun over many years. Renowned as the coiner of the terms “my boom” (what the speaker is into) and “yuru-chara” (a mascot with an adorable but unsophisticated design), and also as a professional in an extensive range of fields, such as illustration, comic creation, essay writing, and music, he calls these pieces “MY RELICS.” We are delighted to exhibit these items in Kyoto, where Mr. Miura was born.

What I have drawn, written, recorded, patched, created, compiled, collected, etc...
I don’t remember when I started to call this jumble of items “MY RELICS.”
I never intended to leave them for posterity. I’ve just given them this name as a mere excuse, in the anticipation that my collection will probably continue to expand in the future (for my “great” remaining years).
So I ask you not to expect that the exhibition will display a usual collection. Please peruse the exhibition, inspiring yourself to enjoy imagining the history of each exhibit, all while thinking, “I didn’t know much about Miura Jun.” Of course, you can just pretend to do so.
Born and bred in Kyoto, I lived there until the summer when I was 18, and since then, I’ve lived in Tokyo. Although this exhibition doesn’t display all the items of MY RELICS, I hope you will in some way appreciate the persistence of this man who needs to express himself in some form to escape from life’s frustrations.
