The 130th Anniversary of the Birth of Kanjiro Kawai: from Tamesaburo Yamamoto Collection

This is an exhibition which commemorates the 130th anniversary of the birth of Kanjiro Kawai (1890–1966),a potter.
Kawai worked in Gojozaka, Kyoto ever since setting up his kiln there in 1920. His diverse output continues to fascinate modern audiences today, more than 50 years after his death.

Kawai was a lifelong friend of Tamesaburo Yamamoto (1893–1966), who was the first president of Asahi Breweries and a patron of Kawai and the Mingei movement. Drawn primarily from the Tamesaburo Yamamoto Collection, which constitutes the core of this museum’s holdings since its founding, this exhibition presents a rare, comprehensive survey of Kanjiro Kawai’s oeuvre from all phases of his career.

Café Event Original cakes exclusive to the Kanjiro Kawai Exhibition

Gâteau Rouge

Inspired by Kanjiro Kawai’s circa 1924 vase, this cake achieves an excellent harmony of slightly tangy strawberry sponge—made by incorporating freeze-dried strawberries into the cake batter—and sweet-and-tangy strawberry butter cream filling. The top is glazed with strawberry jelly.

Gâteau Tricolore

Inspired by Kanjiro Kawai’s circa 1961 tea bowl, this cake is all about enjoying its different-flavored layers. Sandwiched between two layers of sponge cake are orange and pistachio butter creams, and cocoa sponge. Diced almonds are incorporated into the caramel butter cream coating.
