The long neck emerging from sloping shoulders with a skewed, elliptic head on top, and both hands crossed on the knees, all represent the characteristic features of Modigliani’s portraits. His style is said to have been influenced by the sculptor Brâncuşi, as well as the fourteenth-century Sienese School of Painting, and African sculpture. The identity of the girl is unknown, but it is thought she was called “Jeanne” or “Huguette.”
Born in Livorno, Italy. He moved to Paris in 1906, where he was based in Montmartre and later Montparnasse. He first worked as a sculptor, before concentrating on painting from around 1914. He was one of the major painters of the École de Paris.
