Oyamazaki Villa’s Hospitality —Big Tea Ceremony with Mitate Used by Rikyu and Monet
30th september 2011 – 9th january 2012
Oyamazaki Villa’s Hospitality is related to Big Tea Ceremony which is held in Oyamazaki town in November as a part of the 26th National Cultural Festival in Kyoto. This exhibition represents tea ceremonies and the other various gatherings.
Some of the tea ceremonies are seen anew – mitate – by two imaginary artists. One is the legendary tea master Sen no Rikyu who once stayed and held tea ceremonies in Oyamazaki. The other is the most popular impressionist painter Claude Monet. They juxtapose tea bowls and western art work. In the installation named after Rikyu, fresh and unexpected juxtaposition create the highly-charged atmosphere. In the installation named after Monet, the combination of his painting and Japanese ceramics represents his beloved Japanese nature, which creates his haven.
How people were entertained in Oyamazaki villa in its early years is also introduced in this exhibition.
