Kansai · Chairs · Now Have a seat in Oyamazaki Villa

17th June – 25th September

A chair is one of the familiar furnitures today. Most people use it in their home. Not only its function but also its decoration have attracted many artists and designers. It has been invested with special meaning. For example, it is a symbol of the westernized modern life style in Japan. It also symbolizes power such as the throne of an emperor.

In this exhibition, wooden chairs made by a legendary woodwork and lacquer artist, Tatsuaki KURODA, are exhibited from the museum's collection. Kuroda was one of the important members of the Mingei movement. Oyamazaki villa has unique built-in sofas and wooden chairs. Along with these historical chairs, thirty Kansai-based artists produced fifty-four chairs on which visitors are invited to sit.

Let’s have a seat and think!
