Asahi Breweries, Ltd. 120th Anniversary By the Water-lily Pond MONET, Yoshihiro SUDA and Zon ITO

2009 10/28[wed]—0101/31[sun]

This exhibition introduces two internationally acclaimed artists who draw inspiration from everyday life and create the electrifying world. A painting artist, Rieko Hidaka, gazes up at a tree planted in her backyard and depicts it as if a minute metal work were represented on a sheet of paper. A video artist, Hiraki Sawa, converts his room into unknown land in his video works by letting camels and other animals travel around it.

In this exhibition, five of Hidaka’s major paintings are installed in the annex building designed by a well-known architect, Tadao Ando. The viewer will find portrayed branches in her works as if they were elongated to the sky through the building’s skylight. Eight of Sawa’s video works are placed in the main building which was originally a residential villa. The viewer will enjoy the playfulness of his works which curiously fit in the antique villa.

PROFILE

Rieko HIDAKA (Born 1958 in Tokyo)

Learned Nihon-ga (Japanese painting) in Musashino Art University. Lives in Tokyo.
Hidaka has depicted only trees since her having graduated from the art university. Although she uses pigments and paper for Nihon-ga, she has presented her works not in the conventional Nihon-ga exhibitions but in the various contemporary art exhibitions. She looks up trees and portrays them exactly as she observes. She framed them on a sheet of paper, but never reconstruct them in the arbitrary manner. She searches for the truth of seeing by her painting with all her heart and soul.

Hiraki SAWA (Born 1977 in Ishikawa)

Completed master of art in sculpture at Slade School of Fine Art in London. Lives in London.
Sawa started to create video works after he helped his friend on using computer animation software. His first work, dwelling, in 2002 shows airplanes flying in his apartment without sound, which represents a new visual image creating from mundane environment. He often uses his apartment as a stage of his video works. By moving everyday objects and controlling sound, his works convey slow and rich flow of time, which fascinates us with a little bizarre but relaxing atmosphere.
