Lovely Country Life departure from Utopia Oyamazaki Villa & Artist colonies in France and Britain
3 March2010[wed]— 30 May2010[sun] *Opened on the 3rd May (Mon)
This exhibition focuses on the artist colonies in France, Britain and Japan which were formed in the countryside from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century.
Improvements in transport encouraged many artists to go to countryside and several artist colonies emerged. Barbizon School in France was the earliest example of them. The Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain was notable for its concept inspired by medieval guilds of craftsmen. The artists, who participated in Mingei Movement in Japan, settled in countryside after experiencing artist colonies in Britain. As for Japan, Kamigamo Craft Guild was established in Kyoto.
The artists shared the enthusiasm for “nostalgia” for nature and their own traditional culture. They re-evaluated the relationship between man and nature, and suggested innovative values which tried to beautify life through handwork.
We hope it will be a golden opportunity to reconsider our present life in industrialised society.
