Asahi Breweries, Ltd. 120th Anniversary By the Water-lily Pond MONET, Yoshihiro SUDA and Zon ITO

2009 10/28[wed]—0101/31[sun]

This exhibition presents three artists’ expression of the water-lily pond. Foremost water-lily is a motif which a French Impressionist master, Claude MONET, loved to portray. All the five of his masterful paintings of water-lilies are exhibited from the museum collection.
About 100 years after Monet’s oeuvres, two Japanese artists created their own version of the same motif. For exhibiting his work in the same gallery as Monet, Yoshihiro SUDA carved and painted wood miraculously for creating his masterpiece Sleeping Lotus.
Zon ITO, whose main medium was embroidery, observed the leaves of water-lilies and grass carps in the pond of Oyamazaki Villa, and created his new works.
Furthermore, a writer, Shin FUKUNAGA, walked around the museum and its garden, and wrote a new essay about the visual art representing water-lilies by these artists in the exhibition leaflet.

PROFILE

Yoshihiro SUDA (born Yamanashi 1969)

Graduated from Tama Art University in Tokyo. Carves and paints wood miraculously and creates plants in their real sizes. Completes works by installing these objects in space. Although they are often quite modest, effacing and at times nearly invisible, the very realistic wooden plants have an overwhelming presence that dominates their surroundings.

Zon ITO (born Osaka 1971)

Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts. Creates embroidered works on various fabrics. Their motifs are plants, animals, fishes, insects and men. The lines portraying these motifs often disappear and mingle with each other, all of which constitute a little mysterious whole. His works’ titles often humorously suggest a key to find what are represented.
