Soetsu (Muneyoshi) YANAGI (supplied by Nihon Mingeikan, Tokyo)

To celebrate the 120th anniversary both of Asahi Brewery and the birth of Muneyoshi Yanagi (1889-1961), this exhibition displays magnificent pieces of Buddhist art of which Yanagi was the first to appreciate its beauty.
Yanagi was a philosopher who established the Mingei Movement, which stated that the folk crafts had a “wholesome” and “free” beauty. In his later years, he disclosed the secret of beauty, which lies in the works produced without any self-consciousness, with the idea of Buddhism: “Given Power”.
This is a chance to see wonderful pieces such as 《Buddha accompanied by bodhisattvas》(the Nihon Mingeikan, Tokyo); “the most beautiful image which human piety has created”, 《Akiba Dai-Gongen》; “one of the best statues of Buddha by Mokujiki”, 《Otsu-e picture》; “the beauty which belongs to only folk pictures”.
